Warm Wishes

Haiku for February 2023

This winter hasn’t been terrible so far. There have been some low temperatures for sure, but little snow (outside of my trip to Michigan). We’ve also had more than our share of frigid winds. After a few months, I tend to tire of the grey, chilly days.

Today was warmer, well above average. Though the cold will certainly return, I decided to take advantage of this respite from icy days with a short trip. While stopped at Broomes Island to pick up oysters, I took a moment to enjoy the fresh air by the water, and recalled summer days and sailing on the Patuxent years ago.

An image of the Broomes Island Post Office which is a small frame building, not much more than a shed. I’m not sure more than a couple of people would fit inside. When this photo was taken the siding was gray. It is now white. And the tree in front has been removed. Those are the only changes I can tell from forty years ago.

Broomes Island is a different sort of place. The world has grown up around it, but it hasn’t changed much in the last forty years. I rather like that for some reason. Sure, there are have been a few inroads by modernity, though not enough to alter the basic character of the area. It still takes me back to my roots by the water.

And that’s what this haiku is about.

A photo of the Patuxent River taken February 2023 from Broomes Island, Maryland. The sky is mostly grey with a few patches of blue. The river is a grey-green color, and is calm. Photo by K. R. Smith.

For those using a screen reader, the haiku is:

Summer memories
Rising from the cold waters
Promise warmer days
