Haiku for February 2025

Black and white — or color?

We’ve had more than a few cold days during February, but that hasn’t stopped me from going out and visiting nature. This winter has had its fair share of snow, too.

The cloudy skies and trees outlined in white limit the season’s palette. It takes a while for my eyes to adjust — they seem to be searching for color where none exists.

Snow-covered trees line up against a cloudy, gray sky.

For those using a screen reader, the haiku is:

All black, white, and gray,
These wintry dramas play out
Like old TV shows

Of course, the dreariness of an overcast day makes any bit of color stand out. Perhaps it’s time to change the channel! A bit of sun changes the mood — and enjoying nature demands a slower pace.

A snow-covered trail winds through a woodland. A patch of blue sky shows in the distance. There are tall trees casting shadows.

For those using a screen reader, the haiku is:

Silent steps still show
As long shadows mark the trail;
Rush hour is over
