Now for this month’s haiku…

In this supposedly modern world, people can be oblivious to the drama right outside their door. On a chill winter’s night, they are snug in their beds, or watching a show on Netflix, perhaps. Even in many of the most urban areas, wildlife survives. I have heard the eerie call of the fox in the middle of suburbia, the owl’s silent wings spread wide as it swoops towards its prey. And the poor mouse — trying to find a late evening meal — often becomes dinner itself. But that’s how it is. Nature is not a Disney movie. Surviving, even for a while, can be difficult.

Mankind seems to think itself above all that. I wonder if people understand just how little separates us from what we believe to be an uncivilized existence. Pray we are never forced to find out.

A cloud-obscured moon shines through bare winter trees.

For those using a screen reader, the haiku is:

Under a cold moon
Is a tale of life — and death;
One show and reruns
