Haiku For December 2023

What if Yeats visited Virginia?

I journeyed over to the Occoquan River a few days ago. It was a damp, misty afternoon. Although many would not enjoy such a dreary landscape, I found the fog along the river made for a magical day. The world spoke in muffled tones. There was a privacy — an intimacy — that one does not usually experience near the busy shops of Occoquan. And, yes, I did stop in for chocolate at Nazbro. The owner had a new amaretto fudge he wanted me to try. Warm fudge on a chilly day goes together somehow.

After my purchase, I stopped along the river to take a few pictures thinking I might find inspiration in one of them. It seems to have worked. And while I didn’t see any “faeries” wandering about, I’m sure Yeats would have felt right at home.

An old boat is moored along the dock at Occoquan, Virginia, USA. There is little detail to be seen as the river is shrouded in fog. This photo was take by K. R. Smith in December of 2023.

For those using a screen reader, the haiku is:

Beneath the highlands,
Wintry fog quiets even
The flapping herons
