Haiku — Circle of Life

There is balance in the world whether we like it or not

It didn’t take long for the first inspiration of 2025 to strike — literally.

A single feather from a mourning dove. The base is gray, there is a black band in the middle, and the tip is white.

When you live near a natural area, you often spend time just watching the world and its wonders. Like today, for example, while having coffee in the morning. We were taking a sip when a cloud of feathers fell in front of us. Even before it landed, we knew the story. We knew both victor and victim — the hawk and the mourning dove. Nature isn’t cruel; that is a human reaction. It’s just how the world works.

Feathers from a mourning dove are strewn across a wooden deck.

For those using a screen reader, the haiku is:

Falling like snowflakes,
Feathers drift down before us;
The stealthy hawk feasts
