A New Year, A New Dawn

A fresh (re)start?

--

I walked outside this morning to greet the first day of 2023. It was warmer than expected. Mist rose through the trees as the sun sent its glowing beams towards me. The landscape was beautiful, calm, and peaceful. This seemed like a good sign.

I could be wrong, of course. I was wrong at least once before, or so I’m told.

Still, I’ll take whatever good I can find and hold onto it as long as I can. As one gets older, one understands death might reach out its withered hand to lead you away to the underworld at any time. As Fats Waller used to say, “One never knows, do one?” I won’t go quietly. There are still a few things I’d like to accomplish in this world.

First of all, I wish to write more. So, I’m starting off the with another haiku. This isn’t my monthly haiku, though. I haven’t even thought about that one yet. This, however, is my first haiku of 2023, for whatever that’s worth. Perhaps this will hold you over until I get on a regular schedule…

The image for the haiku is the hazy, morning sun shining through an opening in a forest. The photo was taken by K. R. Smith on January 1, 2023.

For those using a screen reader, the haiku is:

The sun lights a path,
But I must choose to walk it;
“Why not?” I reply
