The story that follows is for a flash fiction writing challenge posted each week by author Miranda Kate. This is week number 235! You can click on this link to see the prompt image and rules. I don’t post the pictures here as I’m not sure about copyrights and such. But checking out the image does give some background for the tale I present here.

The words “Flash Fiction” on a dark blue background with a lightning bolt down the right side.

The challenge asks for a story less than 750 words. My story has 479 words (not including the title), just in case you were counting.

Like all my fiction pieces, I’m not sure where this story comes from. The idea simply pops into my head as a mostly complete work. Sometimes a prompt image or word helps, but I don’t sit down to write a story about a subject or situation — it’s just appears in my brain.

So, here it is…

“I’d like to return this, please.”

Wenlac held out the micro-universe cube for the customer service representative droid to see. Its eyes scanned the device, then looked at Wenlac.

“Is there a problem?”

“Well, yes, in a way. The advertisement promised lots of fun and interesting viewing of the nano-planetary system inside. I can’t say it’s lived up to the hype.”
