Am I in the Right Place?

And what do I do if I’m not?

I’m closing in on 200 published posts here on Medium. That number surprises me. While I’ve made a few bucks (emphasis on few), my audience isn’t growing by leaps and bounds. Perhaps this might be a good time to review my place here.

What started all this was Medium’s Staff picks as of January 30, 2025. I spotted this by chance while nosing around the site. Not having followed anyone new here for some time, this seemed a serendipitous event as there might be an article of interest or a new writer to become acquainted with.

Opening the comments to see what others thought seemed like a good idea. The very first one was a complaint about the lack of fiction and poetry. This caught my eye as a lot of what I do on Medium is haiku and other poetry. The staffer who replied said this appeared to be correct and promised to add some. Which they did.

What I found wasn’t really poetry like I create, however. It was free-form angsty stuff that doesn’t match up with my writing. I do haiku, rhyming poetry, and storytelling. This didn’t give me any warm feelings about continuing on Medium.

But it got me thinking. That happens from time to time. Considering what I write, is Medium a good place for me? Are there other places that might be a better fit?
