A Turtle Turtling
Why did the turtle cross the road?
Yes, why do turtles always cross the road in front of me? Are they looking for a chicken? I’ve given up counting the number of these reptiles I’ve assisted over the years. Do they think I’m an easy mark and they know I’ll give them a boost towards their destination?
And when you do help them, do they ever show any appreciation for your efforts? Several years ago, I pulled a large snapping turtle to safety from the middle of a blind curve on a rural back road. Was it grateful? Hardly. Hey, maybe it just woke up on the wrong side of the swamp. And this little fellow? All he did was tuck his head inside and act aloof.
Still, it appears to be my lot in life to carry turtles to and fro to safety. That will probably continue until I’m no longer able to travel down the winding road of life.
For those using a screen reader, the haiku is:
On its slow journey,
The turtle stops in the road;
Checking GPS?
NOTE: This may be a bit of a stretch as a haiku. I’m not sure what the rules are for acronyms, but I used each letter as a syllable as it is spoken. Also, I believe the turtle is an Eastern Painted Turtle. They are common in the Middle Atlantic states and are not endangered. Well, except for the ones crossing the road.
